GENERAL INFORMATION

The student works with a 10-physician family practice-internal medicine group in western Montana that covers a wide range of family medicine including pediatrics, internal medicine, and obstetrics in both in- and out-patient settings. A "free-clinic for the working poor" experience is also available. The physicians provide urgent care services and students receive in-depth exposure to this aspect of practice. This community is approximately 20 miles west of Glacier National Park, seven miles south of the Big Mountain ski area, and near other major mountain wilderness areas. Tourism, timber, farming, aluminum smelting, and railroading are the major industries in the area. This unit has been involved with teaching students since 1974.

Faculty: The clerkship coordinators at Whitefish are Drs. Erickson and Miller; other physicians who participate in student teaching include: Ron Miller, John Kalbfleisch, Dan Munzing, Jennie Eckstrom, Jon Torgerson, and Rod Vaught.

Housing: Three-bedroom house that is three blocks from the clinic and one mile from the hospital. The house has a garage, washer and dryer, dishwasher, cable (with a small old TV), yard, and new appliances. It’s within walking distance of a grocery store. No pets.

Transportation: Car required in fall and winter. A car is recommended in spring and summer,
