Students may sign up for either one, two or three quarters. Students should obtain an add code from the program coordinator in E304 prior to that quarter's orientation date. Students are also requested to fill out an enrollment survey (select quarter from dropdown menu), which includes questions that are used to match students with preceptors. Due to time constraints, we will be unable to enroll students past the orientation date.
Every effort is made to match students with preceptors based on student's transportation needs, and the practice qualities that students report to be most important on the enrollment survey. The matching process is by no means a perfect system and is highly dependent on the pool of volunteer physicians we have interested in teaching the course. If you are in any way unsatisfied with your match and wish to be reassigned to a different physician, please contact either the FM 501 coordinator or Amanda Keerbs, M.D. to request this reassignment. If you have not heard from the coordinator regarding your match by orientation, please speak with him/her at orientation or contact him/her at fm501@fammed.washington.edu for more information. We always verify preceptor availability before notifying students of the match, and at times this is the step that slows the matching process.
The course is graded satisfactory / unsatisfactory. Students unable to complete the course requirements should withdraw as early as possible. If a student has concerns about completing the course, he/she should contact the course coordinator before dropping to see what other options might be available. After the first week of the quarter a fee must be paid for withdrawing. Incompletes will be granted only for personal and family emergencies only. Failure to complete the course requirements will result in an unsatisfactory grade.
University of Washington medical students who participate in this course must follow the Procedure Following Occupational Exposure to Blood/Body Fluids. Immediate exposure evaluation and care is covered by the Medical School. If an exposure or accident occurs while you are working with your preceptor, notify your preceptor immediately, obrtain immediate first aid if necessary and call Employee Health (206) 598-484 or the UW Emergency Department (206) 598-4000.
