Letter to Students

Welcome to Family Medicine 501!

We hope that you find Family Medicine 501 to be a hands-on clinical experience that brings to life what you are learning in the classroom. The majority of the course will take place in the office of a community family physician. There will be two mandatory one-hour classroom sessions: an orientation and a mid-course review session. You may choose to take this course for one, two or three quarters. If you decide to sign up for more than one quarter, you can continue with the same preceptor, or choose a new preceptor.

Our preceptors come from a variety of private, group and community clinic practices in the greater Seattle area. All are volunteers: they teach medical students because they have an interest in passing their knowledge down to the next generation of physicians. If you have a specific preceptor that you would like to work with, please let us know. In order to receive credit through Family Medicine 501, requested preceptors must be family physicians.

You will be matched with your preceptor based on your schedule and your clinical interests. Matching is usually done on a first-come first-served basis. While we are usually successful in placing students in the types of practices they request, sometimes this is not possible. More often, this occurs during Spring Quarter, when most first year students are looking to complete their continuity requirement.

To ensure timely student-preceptor matching, we will be unable to accommodate students who wish to sign up after the orientation session. Please check our website for the latest orientation schedule. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the course, please feel free to contact the course faculty or staff.

We wish you the best in your medical school career!
