Biographical Information

Tom Taylor is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine and has been an attending physician at the Pain Center since 1989 in the University of Washington Medical Center where he directed a Headache Evaluation and Management Program. Dr. Taylor's practice in the PAIN CENTER currently focuses on the behavioral, cognitive and pharmacological management of chronic pain and headache. He is an invited participant in the development and on-going evaluation of the WASHINGTON INTERAGENCY GUIDELINE ON OPIODE DOSING FOR CHRONIC PAIN. He was Director of Research in the Department of Family Medicine from 1992-2003. From 1994-1999 Dr. Taylor was the Director of the Joint UW School of Medicine/American Academy of Family Practice National Clinical Policies Center. The Center developed, field tested and evaluated both AAFP and AHCPR clinical guidelines.


Teaching Interests & Roles

Dr. Taylor has been chair of the School of Medicine program on Independent Studies in Clinical Science since 1992 and supervises over 100 research projects annually. He has a long-standing interest in the teaching of clinical decision-making and Evidence-Based Medicine to medical students. He lectures widely on clinical evidence based management of chronic pain and opiate use in primary care settings.


Research Interests & Roles

Dr. Taylor has conducted research and published papers on a wide range of topics focusing on both physician and patient decision-making using a wide range of methodologies from qualitative to quantitative.

More recently his research has focused on dissemination and evaluation of clinical guidelines. This has included a large statewide intervention and outcome study in 143 community practices in Washington State aimed at improving the dissemination of mammography guidelines. This was funded by AHCPR.

He directed a guideline /clinical decision-making research group which focused on a NIA funded grant to create and evaluate a web-based decision support for women making decisions about the use of hormone replacement therapy and other issues related to menopause and life after menopause.

Tom Taylor is a co-author with Gordon Irving MD and Mark Wallace MD of a new chapter on "The Evaluation Of Chronic Pain Patient" in the latest edition of BONICA's textbook on THE MANAGEMENT OF PAIN
