University of Washington School of Medicine Course Number: FAMED 688
Sub-internship spots are generally offered as four-week blocks throughout the year with the exception of June and July. Students work with senior residents caring for patients on the Family Medicine Inpatient Service as well as in our Family Medical Centers, with opportunities for home visits. Students are also invited to weekly half-day didactic conferences given for the residents, covering a variety of primary care oriented workshops and case discussions.
The Family Medicine Inpatient Service provides inpatient care for adults, obstetric patients and their newborns, all from our own clinics or other family medicine clinics in the area. The Service is run by senior Family Medicine residents with supervision from Family Medicine faculty members. Rotation and call responsibilities include some weekend work, but only a small number of nights as our system has a night float for weeknight and weekend coverage. The outpatient clinic experience can be done at either the Roosevelt or Harborview Family Medical Centers and can be tailored to each student’s interests.
These positions are preferentially opened to University of Washington students as part of their MS4 elective options in the spring of each year. Any positions unfilled by June of that year are available to students who will be entering the MS4 year at other accredited medical schools, and can be applied for through the UW School of Medicine.
