Research is conducted throughout the year. It is a principal function of the Friday Harbor Laboratories to provide facilities for visiting investigators from national and international institutions. Less emphasis is placed upon a permanent, resident research program. Laboratory space and housing for investigators and visiting classes are available year-round. Investigators and students are encouraged to use the facilities outside the main instructional period in summer. Accommodations may also be available for college-level educational groups for meetings and symposia. Individuals who wish to apply for research space and housing should do so using the Application for Research Facilities found below. Applications are due on the dates given on the calendar on this page.
When space is limiting, priority among applications is based on evidence of scientific merit, availability of facilities requested, and the need for organisms, environments, or facilities that are especially available at FHL. Teaching faculty have priority in housing. Visitors who do not need lab facilities, organisms, or field sites for their research should also consider the Helen R. Whiteley Center, which provides studies for visiting scholars and shares housing on the same campus.
Applicants for research space should review the Research Policies that are adhered to at FHL and determine if and how they will influence their research plans. There are specific policies relating to, exotic species restrictions, collecting organisms, SCUBA diving, the use of isotopes, animal care review information, and the UW equal opportunity statement.

Independent Investigators, FHL Post-doctoral applicants, and Research Assistants should use this procedure to apply for the use of housing or research facilities at Friday Harbor Laboratories. Course faculty should use this format to apply for housing during their time at FHL. To apply, please e-mail the following two application parts.
1. Please e-mail to Vikky Dauciunas two documents: (a) your 2-5 page CV, and (b) a document which details your publications and grants related to your research at FHL.
2. Application for Research Facilities. Complete the online application. Please note that we are only accepting applications by this process. Applications by fax or mail will not be accepted.
If you don't have a graduate degree: Independent investigators who have not received a graduate degree should submit an Application for Research Facilities and provide the name and address of a person who can testify to their ability to carry on independent work. Upon acceptance by the Director, UW students should register at the University of Washington for 498, 499, 600, 700, or 800-level courses, unless enrolled in similar independent study coursework from another academic institution. Permission of the Director is required for registration for less than full credit. Graduate students are encouraged to apply for fellowship funding.
