Strathfest
December 31, 2009 - January 3, 2010

Background:

The year 2009 marks Dr. Richard R. Strathmann’s official retirement from the University of Washington.  To celebrate his career-long commitment to his science, his students, and his colleagues around the world, we invite you to spend New Year’s 2010 at FHL.  This event will honor the many ways that Richard has inspired and influenced our research and teaching.  We will also have a chance to relax and enjoy some FHL traditions that are part of Richard’s legacy.

Focus:

FHL ‘Strathfest’ will include events for which we invite your participation:

(1)   An informal tribute to GIS (the global influence of Strathmann).

Richard and Megumi Strathmann have made contributions to the study and teaching of invertebrate development that reach around the world.  Whether you have studied, taught, or worked alongside the Strathmanns, you have stories to share about how that interaction shaped your approach to a particular problem, or influenced your research or teaching at Friday Harbor or other marine stations.  Or, perhaps you have images of cool larvae or research destinations, or brief clips of developmental processes that Richard and Meg would enjoy.  We ask you to contribute a few digital images or videos and to share your stories, using narration, interpretive dance, or whatever presentation format you like.  The microphone will be ‘open’ for audience participation!

If you are unable to attend this event but would like to contribute, please contact one of the organizers.  We will gladly arrange for the display of photos, video, or slides that you wish to share.

(2)  A silent auction of larval art.

Larval art is under-recognized (and certainly under-represented) in the wider art community, but has reached its zenith, we believe, at FHL—thanks in large part to Richard and other instructors in the FHL summer courses.  Whether you explore functional morphology through sculpture, reveal the beauty (or attitude) of your study organisms through photography, or have your own unclassifiable and campy way of celebrating indirect development, we encourage you to put your talent on display.  After all, this is the audience that is most likely to applaud your genius!  And by bidding for the items through a silent auction, you can help to raise money for the Richard and Megumi Strathmann Endowed Fellowship .  Anything you choose to call art is welcome, as long as it is original and of your own creation.

(3) Larval poetry slam

One tradition that has developed in FHL classes taught by Richard involves an extension of Garstang’s famous collection of larval poetry.  In honor of Richard’s retirement, we would like to compile a volume of larval doggerel.  Come prepared to contribute any form you like: limerick, free verse, sonnet, ode, tanka, haiku, rap…
