Please email Stacy Markman, FHL Student Coordinator, to inquire.**ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE: Accepted students are expected to arrive at Friday Harbor Laboratories on San Juan Island on Sunday the day before classes begin on Monday morning. Students are asked to arrive after 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, preferably in time for the first meal of the term, Sunday dinner served 5:00-5:30 p.m., although some students will not be able to arrive until later in the evening.
All terms end on a Friday following lab clean-up, usually completed at about noon; lunch is included on the final day (Friday) of the term served 12:15 - 12:45 p.m. Students are usually asked to move their belongings out of the dorm rooms before breakfast on the final day (luggage may be stored on campus until departure) if another group of students is scheduled to arrive.
TRAVELING TO FRIDAY HARBOR: If flying into Seattle please allow sufficient time for the last leg of your journey from Seattle to Friday Harbor (by commuter aircraft or float plane on Kenmore Air, or on the Washington State Ferries from Anacortes, a town ~two hours north of Seattle). You may need to schedule your arrival in Seattle on Sunday morning or early afternoon, or plan to spend the night in Seattle the Saturday before you travel from Seattle to Friday Harbor on Sunday, with classes beginning on Monday morning.
Click here for more information about traveling to Friday Harbor: Directions to FHL
CLASSES ARE FULL-TIME: Courses and apprenticeships require a full-time commitment, normally all day Monday-Friday in Spring and Autumn Quarters, Monday-Friday plus Saturday mornings for summer courses. All courses and research apprenticeships end on Friday after lab clean-up, usually around noon; lunch is included on the final day (Friday) of the term. Please contact faculty to confirm the expected schedule for any particular course or apprenticeship. It is not possible to commute daily from Seattle, and traveling to Seattle for the weekend can be very time consuming (and expensive) and we do not encourage travel during the term, although an occasional weekend away may be possible.
***THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY: Over the Thanksgiving holiday in November classes will not be held Thursday through Sunday, and the FHL Dining Hall will be closed Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning, reopening for dinner on Sunday at 5:00 p.m. Students may choose to stay on the FHL campus over the Thanksgiving holiday and can be given access to cooking facilities for these four days. (For other observed holidays, please refer to the table above.)
