**ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE: Accepted students are expected to arrive at Friday Harbor Laboratories on San Juan Island after 3:00 p.m. the day before classes begin. Some students will not be able to arrive until later in the evening. The first meal included in the meal plan will be the night before classes begin. Dinner is served Monday-Saturday 6:00-6:30 p.m. and on Sunday at 5:00 - 5:30 p.m.
If a student needs to arrive on campus earlier than 3:00 p.m. the day before classes begin they may store belongings at FHL until dorm rooms are available. If a student needs to arrive a day or more early they may contact FHL to ask if housing will be available and, if not, may need to stay in a hotel in Seattle, Anacortes (from where the ferry departs on the mainland) or in Friday Harbor. For information about FHL housing availability and costs, please email FHL Facilities Coordinator, Vikky Dauciunas at:
fhlfac@uw.edu
At the end of the term students may be asked to move their belongings out of the dorm rooms before breakfast on the final day (luggage may be stored on campus until departure) if another group of students is scheduled to arrive.
TRAVELING TO FRIDAY HARBOR: If flying into Seattle please allow sufficient time for the last leg of your journey from Seattle to Friday Harbor (by commuter aircraft or float plane on Kenmore Air, or on the Washington State Ferries from Anacortes, a town ~two hours drive north of Seattle). You may need to schedule your arrival in Seattle in the morning or early afternoon the day before classes begin, or plan to spend the night in Seattle the day before you travel from Seattle to Friday Harbor. Again, please plan to arrive in Friday Harbor the afternoon or evening on the day before classes begin.
Click here for more information about traveling to Friday Harbor: Directions to FHL
CLASSES ARE FULL-TIME: Courses and apprenticeships require a full-time commitment, normally all day Monday-Friday in Spring and Autumn Quarters, Monday-Friday plus Saturday mornings for summer courses. Please contact faculty to confirm the expected schedule for any particular course or apprenticeship. It is not possible to commute daily from Seattle, and traveling to Seattle for the weekend can be very time consuming (and expensive) and we do not encourage travel during the term, although an occasional weekend away may be possible.
***THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY: Over the Thanksgiving holiday in November classes will not be held Thursday through Sunday, and the FHL Dining Hall will be closed Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning, reopening for dinner on Sunday at 5:00 p.m. Students may choose to stay on the FHL campus over the Thanksgiving holiday and can be given access to cooking facilities for these four days. (For other observed holidays, please refer to the table above.)
