**ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE: Accepted students are expected to arrive at Friday Harbor Laboratories on San Juan Island after 3:00 p.m. the day before classes begin. Students are encouraged but not required to attend the first meal served, normally dinner the evening before classes begin. Students may, if they choose, arrive later, after dinner time. Dinner is usually served Monday-Saturday 6:00-6:30 p.m. and on Sunday at 5:00-5:30 p.m. There are no other activities scheduled for students after dinner; students are given the evening to unpack and settle into the dorms. All students should be prepared to attend the first morning's class.

If a student needs to arrive on campus earlier than 3:00 p.m. the day before classes begin, they may store belongings at FHL until dorm rooms are available. If a student needs to arrive a day or more early they may contact FHL to ask if housing will be available and, if not, may need to stay in a hotel in Seattle, Anacortes (from where the ferry departs on the mainland) or in Friday Harbor. For information about FHL housing availability and costs, please email FHL Facilities Coordinator, Vikky Dauciunas at: vikkyd@uw.edu

At the end of the term students may be asked to move their belongings out of the dorm rooms before breakfast on the final day (luggage may be stored on campus until departure) if another group of students is scheduled to arrive.

TRAVELING TO FRIDAY HARBOR: If flying into Seattle please allow sufficient time for the last leg of your journey from Seattle to Friday Harbor (by commuter aircraft or float plane on Kenmore Air, or on the Washington State Ferries from Anacortes, a town ~two hours drive north of Seattle). You may need to schedule your arrival in Seattle in the morning or early afternoon the day before classes begin, or plan to spend the night in Seattle the day before you travel from Seattle to Friday Harbor. Again, please plan to arrive in Friday Harbor the afternoon or evening on the day before classes begin. Click here for more information about traveling to Friday Harbor: Traveling to Friday Harbor

CLASSES ARE FULL-TIME: Courses and research apprenticeships require a full-time commitment, normally all day Monday-Friday in Spring and Autumn Quarters, Monday-Friday plus Saturday mornings for summer courses. Please contact faculty to confirm the expected schedule for any particular course or apprenticeship. It is not possible to commute daily from Seattle, and traveling to Seattle for the weekend can be very time consuming (and expensive) and we do not encourage travel during the term, although an occasional weekend away may be possible.

***THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY: Thanksgiving Day is always celebrated in the U.S. on the fourth Thursday of November. Over the Thanksgiving holiday week classes will not be held Thursday or Friday. The FHL Dining Hall will be closed beginning after lunch on Wednesday (hot lunches will be served on Wednesday, but no dinner), Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning, reopening for dinner on Sunday at 5:00 p.m. Students may choose to stay on the FHL campus over the four-day Thanksgiving holiday and can be given access to cooking facilities during these days.
