last modified 11-09-2009

NOTES:

Fees for FHL courses, including tuition, are the same for ALL participants (Washington State residents and non-residents, students matriculated at University of Washington, those enrolled at other educational institutions, post-baccalaureates or those not currently matriculated).

FHL staff will register ALL students for coursework at Friday Harbor Laboratories, including students matriculated at University of Washington (i.e., UW students do not register themselves for courses at FHL).

Students are encouraged to check with their home insitution to confirm that University of Washington credits earned through coursework at Friday Harbor Laboratories are transferable.

Students facing financial constraints may apply for financial aid support from Friday Harbor Labs. Awards from FHL are based on both financial need and academic merit. Applicants for financial aid support from FHL do not need to be U.S. citizens and do not need to be currently matriculated at University of Washington. Please review application information at:

Room & Board Information

The full-board meal plan is mandatory for all persons living in dormitories. Full-board consists of three meals a day, Monday through Saturday, plus brunch and dinner Sunday. Dining Hall meal service is available (except for a few days) during Spring, Summer, and Autumn Quarters. Meals for students will be served starting with dinner on the Sunday evening before classes begin and ending with lunch on the final Friday of the session. Vegetarian options are available; students should notify FHL Dining Hall staff of their preference for vegetarian meals at the first meal they attend.

Single occupancy dorm rooms are generally reserved for graduate student Teaching Assistants and Research Assistants.

Optional Bedding Rental

Students are encouraged to arrive on Sunday after 3:00 p.m., the day before classes begin, and depart on the final Friday of the term after lab clean up and lunch (served 12:15-12:45). Students are often asked to move out of the dorms before breakfast on the final Friday to allow FHL custodial staff to prepare for the next group of students; luggage may be stored on the premises until students depart.

Additional Costs for International Students

U.S. Student Visa requirements: All non-U.S. students, including Canadians, accepted to a course or apprenticeship at FHL must request an "I-20 Form" (Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status) issued by the University of Washington International Outreach Program. The I-20 Form will be needed to apply for a U.S. student visa through a U.S. embassy or consulate in the student's home country, a process that may require a month or longer. Canadians do not need to obtain a U.S. student visa but will be required to present their I-20 Form at the border when entering the U.S.

The University of Washington fee for the I-20 Form is $50 and for most students there will also be an Express Mailing fee of $40. Instructions on how to apply for the I-20 Form will be provided by FHL staff to all international students following admission to an FHL course or apprenticeship.

Once the I-20 Form has been issued by UW all non-U.S. students, including Canadians, will also need to submit an application and $200 payment for the U.S. "SEVIS I-901" (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System). The following website provides additional information about SEVIS requirements: http:www.fmjfee.com/index.jhtml

Most international students attending a course or apprenticeship at FHL will thus need to be prepared to pay an additional $290 total: I-20 application ($50), mailing fee ($40), SEVIS fee ($200).

Financial Aid Request from FHL

Students facing financial constraints are encouraged to apply for financial aid support from Friday Harbor Labs. Awards from FHL are based on both financial need and academic merit. Applicants for financial aid support from FHL do not need to be U.S. citizens and do not need to be currently matriculated at University of Washington. Please review application information at:
