Worm Farm

Terebellid in worm farm.

To obtain more detailed observations of the worms within the sediment, we set up two worm farms for observation in the laboratory. We used narrow Plexiglass boxes, but an aquarium with a divider placed in it would likely work as well.  Each box was filled with sediment and placed in a sea table with adequate water flow. The key to making successful observations is to have the farm narrow enough so that the worms can be seen. Many of the organisms that we placed in the farm managed to hide in the middle, avoiding observation. Even so, we were still able to see trails and burrows which gave us an idea of what goes on under the sediment.
