It's no secret that the UW is a big place--it's a city within a city with
thousands of classes to choose from and countless opportunities, all waiting for
you. But how will you meet people? Which classes should you take? How will
you tap into all that awaits? For more than fifteen years, the UW's Freshman
Interest Group (FIG) program has helped new freshmen register for their classes
and make the UW just a bit smaller and more welcoming for autumn quarter.
Approximately 70% of all entering freshmen will register for a FIG.
A FIG is a pre-packaged cluster of high-demand freshman courses that is only offered
autumn quarter. There are several advantages to registering for a FIG:
- It makes the registration process very easy; you can register for most or all
of your classes at once.
- Take classes with the same 20-25 students, so even a lecture class will seem
small
- Take courses that fulfill general education requirements.
- Meet students with similar interests (after all, you chose to register for the
same classes!).
- Form your own UW community.

One of the most significant advantages to registering for a FIG is enrolling in
GEN ST 199: The University Community.
- The class is facilitated by a "FIG Leader," an experienced undergraduate who
serves as a guide to the UW.
- It is a 2-credit course that is graded CR/NC.
- It is designed to assist you in your transition into the UW.
- You will get to engage in a variety of conversations on topics ranging
from academic planning to campus diversity.
- There are opportunities to engage in on- and off-campus social and extracurricular
activities.
- You will get to take advantage of a new electronic portfolio tool to allow you to record
and reflect on information regarding your past, present, and future.
- Take a look at the GEN ST 199 syllabus to find out more!
