About the FIG Program

A FIG is a registration option for new UW freshmen. By registering for a FIG, freshmen share the same cluster of courses with a group of 20-25 other new students. Over 75% of new UW freshmen will register for a FIG in Autumn 2003 -- that's approximately 4000 students in over 175 FIGs!

"I enjoyed the FIG class and all that it offered me this quarter. By having discussions
with the group every week, I felt more connected to the community and was able to talk
about my current experiences at the UW. Since the UW is so large, it was comforting and fun
to have the opportunity to talk with this group every week. I learned a lot from my peers
and my FIG Leader. I would recommend this course in the future to incoming freshmen."

About General Studies 199 A section of General Studies 199, a.k.a. "the FIG class," is included in every FIG. The official title of General Studies 199 is "The University Community" and it's facilitated by a FIG Leader, an experienced UW undergraduate who serves as a teacher and mentor. The purpose of General Studies 199 is to help new freshmen understand what the UW expects of them, what they can expect of the UW, and to take active steps toward maximizing their educational experiences. FIG Leaders facilitate lessons and conversations on topics ranging from academic planning and study skills to diversity and social issues. General Studies 199 convenes for one hour per week along with a handful of out-of-class meetings and excursions. The complete curriculum for General Studies 199 will be available at the end of Winter quarter.

"I enjoyed my time as a FIG Leader. Thanks for the opportunity to become an active member
of the UW community and to look at education from the other side of the podium."

The FIG Experience The FIG program has been in existence at the UW since 1987 and it continues to grow and change from year to year based on student interest. The Autumn 2003 FIG program proves to be another fun and engaging experience for FIG Leaders and FIG students alike. For a glimpse at what a day in the life of a FIG looks like, check out out this article about the FIG program which appeared in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer: "Program Helps Students Feel a Part of the Group".
