About the Program

Finnish First- and Second-Year Classes, 2006

The Finnish program is part of the Scandinavian Studies Department at the University of Washington in Seattle. The core of the Finnish program is language instruction on three levels, which is offered every quarter. The Finnish program enrolls 50-70 students in Finnish-language instruction and cultural courses taught in English by the program faculty every year.

Since 1990, Finnish Studies has been an important part of the University, preparing the next generation of leaders in business, science, education and culture with strong connections to Finland. Finnish studies faculty also contribute to the Finnish community in Seattle.

The Scandinavian Studies Department is one of the oldest departments at the University of Washington. Established in 1909, the department offers courses in language, literature, history, politics, folklore and cultures of Denmark, Iceland, Finland, Norway and Sweden and is the home of the Baltic Studies program.
