Study Information

You are invited to participate in a research study conducted by Ben Jones, a graduate student in the Linguistics Department of the University of Washington.

Before starting the study, I will ask you for some information about yourself. This information will not be used to identify you and cannot be traced back to you once completed. It is intended to help me understand how different people view Maine.

The study involves a brief training activity and completing three (3) tasks. Completing the entire study will take approximately 30 minutes.

The tasks are:

(1) you drawing and labelling areas on a map of Maine. The areas you draw are meant to reflect where you believe people have a particular, identifiable way of speaking.

(2) you will then rate the regions that you drew in the first task.

(3) in the final task you provide information about these regions that you feel represent the views of people you know.

Your participation is voluntary. If you decide to participate in this research study, you may quit at any time, and your responses will be deleted. If you have completed the study and wish to withdraw your information, you may contact me at jonesb28@uw.edu to have your data withdrawn.

Your responses will be confidential, and I do not collect identifying information such as your name or IP address. I do ask for your email address at the end of the study, but the option to provide your email address is voluntary. My purpose for collecting your email address (which you may choose not to provide) is to contact you about a related, follow-up study that I will be conducting. Your email address will not be shared, and the list will be deleted once I have sent out the email for the follow-up study.

You must be 18 years of age or older to participate.

If you have any questions about the study, you may contact me at jonesb28@uw.edu .
