Research

I am interested in the biomechanics of swimming and flying, and particularly with respect to the highly unsteady fluid dynamics of flapping wings, fins and tails. Because of this interest, I have now studied the biofluid dynamics of all major animal groups. For my MSc studies in aerospace engineer at Delft University, the Netherlands, I used a soapfilm tunnel to model the fluid dynamics of fish swimming. For my PhD at Lund University, Sweden, I studied the aerodynamics of bird and bat flight in a wind tunnel. And now finally for my postdoctoral research I am studying maneuvering flight in insects. And then of course that of the most amazing insect of all, the fruit fly.
