FMF Training Topics...

 

The Families Moving Forward (FMF) Program is a specialized behavioral consultation intervention for parents raising children with neurological impairment and challenging behavior.  The FMF Program is now being scientifically validated.

 

FMF training topics are listed below.

 

Most of these training topics are covered with parents, in an individualized and customized manner, during their time in the FMF intervention.

 

Training topics are also covered in depth for interventionists who wish to become “FMF Specialists”

 

Basic training topics:

  • Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs):  The family experience

  • FASDs 101:  What you need to know about alcohol and the brain

  • What is the Families Moving Forward Program?  How does it work?

  • Risk, resilience and rewards:  An overview of strengths, potential, neurodevelopmental disabilities, and related diagnoses for those with FASDs

  • Understanding caregiver needs
    (this covers insights into addiction, recovery, care-giving burden and hope)

  • Windows to understanding neurological impairment and FASDs
    (this covers insights about problems in behavior regulation, complex information-processing, social communication and sensory-integration)

  • FASDs 306:  Looking forward and caregiver self-care

Advanced training topics (most require several sessions):

  • “Reframing:” A core idea for caregivers of those with FASDs

  • Creating “Accommodations:”  A core skill for caregivers of those with FASDs

  • “Brainstorming:”  Positive behavior support planning—A core skill for caregivers of those with FASDs

  • How to use the Families Moving Forward materials in intervention

  • Motivational enhancement in the Families Moving Forward intervention process

  • Using testing to better understand FASDs

  • Sensory-integration in-depth:  Methods for helping those caring for individuals with FASDs

  • Effective advocacy
