Marty Cohen, ScD, CIH, CSP.

Director, Senior Lecturer

Marty Cohen has more than 20 years of experience in the varied fields of occupational and environmental health and safety sciences. He has conducted his research and provided services nationwide. Marty earned a bachelor's of science degree in environmental health from Purdue University and then went on to attended Harvard University 's School of Public Health where he received a Master's of Science degree in air pollution control. Applying that knowledge he took a job working with Harvard, the University of Tennessee , and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, heading up an indoor air quality study in Eastern Tennessee . Marty returned to the Harvard School of Public Health where he earned his Doctorate of Science in exposure assessment. His thesis was entitled, "Community Exposures to Volatile Organic Compounds in the Kanawha Valley of West Virginia".

After graduating, he worked with the Boston-based consulting firm, Environmental Health and Engineering as a Senior Scientist conducting industrial hygiene and indoor air quality investigations in a number of industry sectors. Later Dr. Cohen moved to Seattle , continued to work with the consulting firm, and became a Certified Industrial Hygienist. Marty then took a job as a senior industrial hygienist with the State of Washington 's Department of Labor and Industries, Safety and Health Assessment and Research for Prevention (SHARP) Program. With the SHARP Program, Marty evaluated numerous health and safety exposures in a variety of industries across Washington State . He was the Principle Investigator on NIOSH grants looking at musculoskeletal exposures to tree nursery workers, workplace dermatitis, and work-related fatalities. His work with SHARP also allowed him to develop a video system for evaluating worker dust and solvent exposures in real-time. After ten years with SHARP, Marty took a position at the University of Washington as the Director of the Exposure Assessment Center for the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA): Air Pollution Study. In January of 2008, Marty joined the Field Research and Consultation Group, where he conducts occupational health-related service projects and looks to apply exposure
