Placement Test Information

If you took French/Italian in high school you must take the placement test, unless you already have college credit for the language.  Otherwise, the UW registration system will not allow you to register for French/Italian courses.

If you have never taken French/Italian, you do not need to take a placement test. You are eligible for first quarter language (101).

Placement tests are administered at the

Office of Educational Assessment
(206) 543-1170
440 Schmitz Hall

Waiting lists

French/Italian 101 (5 credits)

  • Designed for absolute beginners.
  • Students who have taken 2 or more years of French/Italian in high school will not earn credit for French or Italian 101, and should take a placement test. Students in this category who place into 101 may enroll in the course, but credits will not apply to overall credit total.
  • Students who are eligible for 101 can register during Period I.

French/Italian 110 (5 credits)

  • Designed for students who have had two or more years of high school French.
  • Fr 110 will count for credit even if you have had 2 or more years of high school French (unlike Fr 101).
  • Students must score between 10 and 30 on the placement test in order to be eligible for Fr 110.
  • Students who are eligible for 110 can register during Period I.

French/Italian 102 (5 credits) or 103 (5 credits):

  • Students who place into French/Italian 102 or 103 are eligible to register at the start of Period II registration.  To view registration period dates for the 2008-09 academic year, please visit the academic calendar.

French/Italian 201 and above (5 credits each):

  • Students who place out of French/Italian 103 on the 100-level placement exam are eligible for French/Italian 201 and may register at the start of Period II registration. Placement out of 103 into fulfills the College of Arts and Sciences Foreign Language Requirement.
  • If a student places out of 103 and wishes to take the 200-level placement exam, that exam can be scheduled through the Testing Center by calling (206) 543-1171. Students wishing to by-pass the 100-level exam should consult with an adviser in French/Italian to receive permission to do so.
  • It can take approximately two weeks for 200-level exams to be graded and posted to your student record. Please note that second year exams are not graded during quarter breaks or over the summer.

General Registration Information:

STUDENTS WITH PLACEMENT TEST SCORES, TRANSFER STUDENTS,
and OUT-OF-SEQUENCE STUDENTS

Students with placement test scores, transfer credit and others who are not currently enrolled in the language sequence become eligible to register at the start of Period II. Please check the academic calendar for information on when Period I ends and Period II begins.

Students with no prior French/Italian wishing to sign up for the 101 level are eligible to register on their registration date during Period I.

Waiting List Information

If during Period II you aren't able to secure a spot in the appropriate language course, you may attend the class that you're interested in for the first three days of the quarter in order to be considered for any spaces that might become available during that time. While French and Italian Studies does not endorse overloads (limit of 24 students in language courses) it is possible that a student on the waiting list will be invited to join the class if an enrolled student drops the class or is absent for the first three days of class (consecutively).

If you aren't able to enroll after sitting in on a course, please visit the 100/200-level French and Italian Adviser (Jennifer Keene, C-254 Padelford Hall) so that she can assist you with registration the next time the course you want is offered.  This procedure does not apply to 101 courses. There is no way to track and plan for placement test students, transfer students, or out-of-sequence students if the department advisor is not contacted.

Contact the advisor:

1) During the first week of the quarter, after you have been informed that you will not be added to the section that you have been attending.

2) Early on in registration for the next quarter when the class is offered, being sure to include your student #, and the SLN #s of the section/s that work with your schedule.

Summer quarter is the best time to take a language course if you have trouble getting into language sections of your choice during the regular academic year, especially beginning-level courses. Summer registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.  There are 15-credit intensive French and Italian 134 courses offered, the completion of which with a 2.0 or better will meet the College of Arts and Sciences Foreign Language Requirement. French 101, 102, 110, 103, 201, 202, and 203, 301, 302, and 303 and Italian 234 (2nd year intensive) are also offered in the summer. Please refer to the time schedule for information on times and terms (A-term, B-term, or full-term).
