TTH 1:10-5:00, 5 cr., Doug Collins (A-term)

"The hollow years," has been a merited label for the 1930s in France.
And only downhill from there! This sorry decade was followed by what only
got worse??the Marianne in chains? period of the Occupation, that of the
collaboration of the French with a too easily triumphant Nazi Germany. This
grim patch was that of the major fiction production of Ir?ne N?mirovsky,
whose stories and novels offer richly ambivalent treatments of the most
painfully impinging of themes of the period--anti-Semitism, the modern insults to traditional social formations, disruptively unfamiliar business practices, France's relation to its immigrant populations, etc.. Texts to be read include:Un enfant prodige; David Golder; Le Vin de solitude; Les chiens et les loups; Le Ma?tre des ?mes; Suite française.
Course conducted in English. Readings in French.
Prerequisites:
FRENCH 303; either FRENCH 304, FRENCH 305, FRENCH 306 or FRENCH 307.
Required texts: L'enfant prodige; David Golder; Le Vin de solitude; Les Chiens et les loups; Le Maître des âmes; Suite française
