Graduate Exchange Programs
in France and Switzerland

The Division of French and Italian Studies is proud to offer several exchange programs with French-speaking countries. This page describes the opportunities for UW graduate students. Information for students nominated by our partner universities is on the page Information for Visiting Graduate Students on Exchange Programs to UW.

These exchanges are a unique way to diversify and enrich the education students receive at the UW. Each academic year the most promising students are sent to one of three universities in Paris, Versailles, or Geneva.

Paris (Ecole Normale Supérieure de la rue d'Ulm)

The Ecole Normale Supérieure, in addition to being ideally located in Paris provides both food and lodging, and gives access to its libraries.

Versailles (Université de Saint-Quentin en Yvelines)

The Université of Saint-Quentin en Yvelines offers a one-year position of teaching assistant in the Department of English, and is only forty-five minutes away from the center of Paris by train.

Geneva (Université de Genève).

The University of Geneva offers a one-year fellowship and tuition waiver for the students who wish to pursue one of its 3 Diplômes d'Etudes Supérieures. It is an ideal place for advanced students who want to devote themselves to research and add to their résumés a degree designed to be completed in one academic year.

To Apply

We encourage our students to apply to such exchanges because the high standards of these institutions enable them to benefit from very stimulating intellectual environments, to advance their academic research, to access resources and people not available at home, and to broaden their cultural horizons. Advanced French fluency is required of all applicants before they can be considered.

Interested students should send the following document to Assistant Professor Louisa Mackenzie, Chair, Exchange Committee, Box 354361

1) a statement of purpose

2) a curriculum vitae and

3) one letter of recommendation from a faculty member at the University of Washington.

4) For students not enrolled in the Graduate program in French Studies, an additional letter from a faculty member in the Division of French and Italian Studies, attesting to the level of proficiency in French, is required.

All Applications are due on November 15, in the fall quarter preceding the year you wish to participate in the program.

Please note: *All* outbound students on UW exchanges, (grad and undergrad, int'l or domestic) are required to enroll through the International Programs and Exchanges office and pay a $200/qtr or $300/semester IP&E fee. Those graduate students with TA- or RA-ships from the UW for the quarter(s) they are abroad are exempt from this fee. These students enroll on campus in the regular way through MyUW, and receive their stipends through Payroll.

For further information on the application process, please contact Assistant Professor Louisa Mackenzie, Chair, Exchange Committee (louisam@u.washington.edu).
