Courses

French 390/Comp Lit 320 (5 credits):

The course will focus on the historical, artistic and literary representations of the emperor Charlemagne in the Middle Ages, and how these representations helped define France at the time. The course has three primary goals: 1) to introduce students to one of the most enduring figures of French culture; 2) to enrich their experience of Paris, giving them tools to better appreciate the city’s abundant medieval art, and 3) to provide understanding of how French medieval culture remains, even in our global era, the bedrock of French nationhood and national identity.

French 390/490 (10 credits):

Class taught by

Parisi to contemporary Paris:  This class will trace the cultural history of the development of the French capital from its settlement to our century.  Attention will be paid to the various phases of the Parisian urban development (King Philippe Auguste, Henri IV, Louis XV, Napoléon, Haussmann).  Course work will involve numerous visits to Parisian sites. This course may be taken as French 490 by French majors who have completed French 302.
