Major in French Studies


To obtain a BA with a major in French Studies, sixty (60) approved credits above French 203 are required.

French 327 conversation courses do not count towards the major.

Courses

301, 302, 303* Advanced Syntax and Composition (5,5,5) (15 credits)

Three survey courses:

304 Survey of French Literature: Origins to 1600 (5 credits)
305 Survey of French Literature: 1600-1789 (5 credits)
306 Survey of French Literature: 1789-Present ( 5 credits)
Please see adviser about substituting 307 Survey of Francophone Literature (5 credits)

AND


378 The Making of Contemporary France (5 credits)

Three 400-level French Literature Courses (15 credits)

Two additional 300- or 400-level French Literature Courses (10 credits).  If French 300 or 400-level courses are not taken, students may substitute a course from our approved list of lateral courses
 
Prerequisites

French 203 for 301
French 301 for 302/ French 302 for 303
*French 301, 302 & 303 MUST BE TAKEN IN SEQUENCE.
French 303 for any survey literature course (enrollment in 303 may be concurrent with the survey course).
At least one survey literature course (French 304, 305, 306, or 307) must be completed prior to enrolling in 400-level courses.

Primary Endorsement in French:

Available to those with a UW MIT degree and State of WA teaching certificate. Requires completion of 45 credits of 300 and 400-level work.

  • Mandatory requirement: French 301, 302, 303
  • Literary Studies (at least one course from this category): French 304, 305, 306, 307
  • Cultural Studies (at least one from this category): French 378, 470
  • French Linguistics: FRLING 400, 403, 405, or 406
  • To meet the minimum requirement of 45 credits students may take any additional French 400-level credit 304, 305, 306, 307, or French Linguistics 449

Secondary Endorsement in French:

Requires completion of 45 credits of 300 and 400-level French.

  • Mandatory requirement: French 301, 302, 303
  • Cultural Studies (at least one) French 378, 470
  • To meet the minimum requirement of 45 credits of French at the 300 and 400-level, select from the following: 210, 304, 305, 306, 307, and 400-level French course.
