Honors in French or Italian Studies

Eligibility

Honors Program admission eligibility requires a 3.7 average in French or Italian and a 3.5 overall minimum GPA.

The Honors Program in French or Italian Studies provides eligible students with a special academic experience above and beyond their major and prepares them for eventual graduate work.  With successful fulfillment of the requirements, participants in the French and Italian Honors Program receive their degree "With Distinction in French or Italian" (while participants in the College Honors Program receive a baccalaureate degree "With Honors" and must take an entire series of Honors Courses; see the Honors Office for COLLEGE HONORS).

Students admitted into the French or Italian Honors Program enjoy all the rights and privileges of students in the College Honors Program, including access to the Honors Lounge, receipt of the Honors Newsletter, and eligibility for enrollment in special Honors courses and sections in other departments.  See your advisor for more details.

1. Maintain a minimum GPA-- 3.7 in French or Italian and 3.5 overall. FRENCH HONORS STUDENTS must take all courses (excluding 301, 302, 303, 304, 305, 306, and 378) at the 400-level.  Honors students do not have the option to take 10 credits of their major at the 300 level or 10 credits of lateral courses).

3. Submit your signed/approved Honors Paperwork to the French/Italian Adviser before completing fifteen out of twenty-five required French or Italian 400-level credits.

4. Honors Thesis: With permission from your "faculty sponsor" enroll for 2 credits of Honors 490 Independent Study.  For these Honors credits you will write a 15-20 page paper with footnotes and bibliography prepared according to guidelines established in the MLA Handbook. You must submit your Honors Thesis to your faculty sponsor at least one month before the end of the quarter when you plan to graduate.  Request that faculty sponsor submit an e-mail to you and your French/Italian Adviser stating that your final Honors Paper/Project has been completed.
