Off-Site Orientation in California and Hawaii
Due to the large number of students the UW draws from the states of Hawaii and California, First Year Programs will bring the first step of our advising programs — Summer Advising and Orientation— to them and their families. We hope that this will provide some of our out-of-state Huskies and their family members a more cost-effective option for Summer Advising and Orientation by recognizing the travel expenses from the area for attending a session in Seattle.
Summer 2008 Off-Site Locations, Dates, and Fees
Irvine, CA (June 22-23) - Students: $195 | Parents $100 each
Burlingame, CA (June 29-30) - Students: $195 | Parents $100 each
Honolulu, HI (July 29-30)- Students: $255 | Parents $100 each
The off-site advising and orientation sessions are similar to the on-campus sessions in that students will have the opportunity to meet with an adviser, learn about the various academic requirements of the UW and register for their Autumn quarter classes. The price of the session includes lunch on both days of the session. The fee does not include lodging at the session, however some of the hotels offer a special rate for UW Summer A&O students.

We encourage all students to visit campus through Summer Advising and Orienation, but we also recognize that traveling to Seattle may be difficult, and we have developed Off-Site A&O programs that allow us to bring the UW closer to your home. This summer there are 3 Off-Site programs: Northern California, Southern California, and Hawaii; we choose these sites based upon the number of students admitted from that region. When we take A&O “on the road, ” we bring everything and everyone included in our on campus programs . Each 2-day Off-Site program incorporates time for you to take placement tests, learn about campus resources, meet with advisers, and register for classes. You will also have the chance to interact with current UW undergraduates as well as other incoming freshmen and UW alumni from your region. The Off-Site A&O is a great first step in getting to know the UW before you get to know the campus during Dawg Daze. Another added benefit of the Off-Site program is that each incorporates a concurrent but separate 1-day Family Orientation that takes place on the first day of the student program. This allows you and your parents or guardians to get timely and relevant transitional support from the UW at the same time.
IMPORTANT: Since the Off-Site A&O program is not a required part of your transition to the UW, extra fees do apply. The fees associated with the Off-Site programs cover only the costs associated with each program and are designed to be competitive or less expensive than a comparable trip to campus for your A&O program.
The sessions entail a series of workshops designed to provide students' family members with information about the university. Family members will learn about a variety of topics including academic planning, educational financing, campus housing options and campus life. The fee to attend a parent orientation session for all of the off-campus locations is $100 per person. This cost includes lunch and all of the workshop materials.
Students may sign up for an off-campus Summer Advising and Orientation session by selecting the appropriate session on the Advising web page. The extra fee can be paid either by sending a check to the Registrar's Mail Services or a charge for the program will show up on the student's UW account and can be paid with any other extra fees.
When students register for an A&O session, they will be asked if they want to register family
members to attend a Parent Orientation. Parents who are registering separately or are making
registration changes must call FYP.
If any registered guests have any special needs that require accommodation, we ask that you contact First Year Programs as soon as possible so we can make the necessary arrangements.
