Orientations – Autumn Quarter Freshmen
All new students beginning in the Autumn Quarter are required to participate in a Summer Advising and Orientation session at some point between June and September.
Autumn Quarter 2008 begins September 24, 2008.
Follow the steps below to get registered for a session.
ONE: Pay Your NSEOF and Create Your Net ID
Confirm your intent to enroll at UW, by paying the $250 New Student Enrollment and Orientation Fee ($250). You can confirm your payment was received on your MyUW. It usually take up to three days for the registation to get updated so you can register for a session.
Make sure you have created your Net ID. If you have not done that yet, you can do that here. Our system usually takes about three days to be updated before you can log-in.
TWO: Choose Your Session
How do you decide which session is the best for you? While you need to take into account your scheduling needs (work, family, vacations, etc.) you should also consider what the different sessions offer.
General Interest
Am I undecided about what I want to study?
There are over 100 undergraduate majors at the UW and most students, quite possibly you, aren’t yet ready to focus on a narrow area of study. If you want and are interested in an A&O session that will allow you the freedom to keep your options open and so that you can use your first few quarters at the University to explore several disciplines, then a General Interest Session is the perfect choice.

Outdoor Adventure
Would I enjoy getting more in touch with the Pacific Northwest?
Outdoor Adventure sessions put you on an island in the Puget Sound. These sessions are consistently the most highly rated of all our programs. Whether you’re an experienced trekker or have never spent a night outdoors (but would like to give it a shot) we’ve got the A&O program for you!

Off-Site
I live in Hawaii or California. Do I have to come to Seattle?
We encourage all students to visit campus through Summer Advising and Orientation, but we also recognize that traveling to Seattle may be difficult, and we have developed Off-Site A&O programs that allow us to bring the UW closer to your home. This summer there are 3 Off-Site programs: Northern California, Southern California, and Hawaii; we choose these sites based upon the number of students admitted from that region.

Special Interest
How can I connect with lots of students who share my academic interests?
If you hope to declare a major in Engineering or the Arts, we have developed A&O programs specifically with you in mind.

International
This session is intended for international students only. It is a one-day session offered on September 15, 2008 to coincide with FIUTS International Welcome Week as well as to accomdate those international students who may not be arriving for classes until late-September.
Note: If you are an international student, you are not required to attend the International Session. You are welcome to chose from any of our other dates online.
Late Summer
The University of Washington strongly recommends that you attend a 2-day A&O session based upon the amount of information that you receive and the significantly better class selection during course registration. However, we understand that there are legitimate reasons why you may not be able to attend a regular summer program. For this reason, we offer Late Summer A&O programs on campus in the last week prior to the Autumn Quarter. Our goal during Late Summer programs is to provide you with the essential information and advising that you need to register and begin class at the UW.
|
While the sessions may differ slightly in start times and places, they all include opportunities for exploring your academic interests, accessing registration resources, talking with an academic adviser, and registering for classes.
Due to limited space, the Advising and Orientation program is limited to new students only. More detailed information is available to family members at the Parent Orientation sessions.
Each of these sessions combine all the necessary academic advising, registration, and introduction to campus resources that you will need to get off to a solid start at the UW. The General Interest Sessions dedicate additional time to introducing you to the full range of academic possibilities options available at the UW. There will be advisers and staff from a variety of disciplines at each General Interest Session who you can speak with as you consider your options choices.
When you visit our registration website beginning in March and choose an academic area of interest, General Interest Sessions will be one of the A&O options presented to you. When you visit our registration website and are offered a Special Interest Session, simply click on the “No thanks, I’m interested in a General Interest Session” link. Some of our A&O programs tend to close more quickly, so we recommend that you register for your session early in order to have the best selection of dates.
These orientations combine all of the standard features of our General Interest A&O programs, but also provide opportunities to interact directly with faculty and staff from the departments in which you have an interest. Special Interest Sessions are ideal for students who are exploring a particular academic program; you’ll be able to learn about specific major requirements, opportunities within your intended major, and receive more focused academic presentations. You’ll also be attending A&O with students who have similar academic plans as yours and who you are likely to see in class during the coming year.
When you visit our registration website beginning in March and choose an academic area of interest, you will be invited to register for a Special Interest Session. These popular programs tend to fill quickly so we recommend that you register early for the best selection of programs and dates.
The Outdoor Adventure adds a two-day off-campus expedition to your A&O program. Each Outdoor Adventure includes a day of low and high ropes course initiatives, and a night of camping on Whidbey Island. This is followed by a day of coastal hiking that will take you from pristine beaches to old growth forests. As fun and involving as the expedition is, students often say that getting to know everyone on the expedition is even better. With no group larger than 25 students, we purposefully keep the group size small so that everyone can get acquainted. First Year Programs staff will provide all of the planning and logistics for each Outdoor Adventure, including transportation and meals. If your trip includes a ropes course, the facilitators that we use are fully trained and certified. If you select an Outdoor Adventure A&O, you will receive a confirmation which includes a personal packing list and all the details of your expedition. Since the Outdoor Adventure is not a required part of your transition to the UW, extra fees do apply (see registration website beginning in March).
When you visit our registration website beginning in March and choose an academic area of interest, Outdoor Adventures will be one of the A&O options presented to you. There is typically a waiting list for Outdoor Adventures so we recommend that you register early for the best selection of programs and dates.
When we take A&O “on the road, ” we bring everything and everyone included in our on campus programs. Each 2-day Off-Site program incorporates time for you to take placement tests, learn about campus resources, meet with advisers, and register for classes. You will also have the chance to interact with current UW undergraduates as well as other incoming freshmen and UW alumni from your region. For many students, the Off-Site A&O is a great first step in getting to know the UW before you get to know the campus during Dawg Daze. Another added benefit of the Off-Site program is that each incorporates a concurrent but separate 1-day Parent Orientation that takes place on the first day of the student program . This allows you and your parents or guardians to get timely and relevant transitional support from the UW at the same time.
IMPORTANT: Since the Off-Site A&O program is not a required part of your transition to the UW, extra fees do apply. The fees associated with the Off-Site programs cover only the costs associated with each program and are designed to be competitive or less expensive than a comparable trip to campus for your A&O program.

Learn about staying overnight on campus during your session.
We strongly encourage all entering students to participate in Overnight Housing during their A&O program. Besides those students who require local accommodations, we invite students who live locally, are intending on living in a fraternity or sorority, and those who are planning on commuting to campus. Advising and Orientation is more than just selecting your classes, we also want you to be comfortable with the campus and relax with other new freshmen. Staying overnight is the best way to experience the UW campus at your own pace and get a sense of what residence hall life is like. Overnight Housing is also a sensible way to participate in your A&O program: spending the night on campus is cheaper than a night at a hotel, it saves you from making the early commute back to campus for the second day of the program, you’ll learn what life in the residence halls is all about, and the fees include breakfast.
Overnight Housing students are paired with another entering student of the same gender for their stay. Each room is fully furnished with standard residence hall furniture, including 2 twin beds, and all the necessary bedding. All you need to bring are your personal belongings. You’ll have the opportunity to register for Overnight Housing while you are selecting your A&O program date online. If you have further questions, feel free to contact us at 206.543.4905 or fyp@u.washington.edu.
EARLY ARRIVAL AND LATE DEPARTURE
If you are coming a significant distance to attend your A&O program you may want to consider staying on campus the night before (early arrival) or after (late departure) your program. Separate fees apply for these additional overnight accommodations and meals are not provided, but early arrival and late departure are highly economical ways to stay at the University before and after your A&O program. You can register for these accommodations by visiting the
registration website beginning in March, and selecting the date(s) that you wish to stay.
The Small Print
Program Changes
If it is not possible for you to attend the
A&O session that you originally selected,
please return to the A&O registration
website to make the necessary adjustments.
Please make any registration changes as
early as possible to assist us in the planning
of Advising and Orientation programs. Any changes made within
two weeks of the program are subject to
a $20 change fee.
Program Cancellations
If you decide not to attend the UW and
need to cancel your A&O registration,
please contact the Office of Admissions
(206.543.9686 or admit.washington.edu/
Contact/Students) to inform them of your
decision. You should also inform First
Year Programs so our staff can update
your student account. Please make any
registration cancellations as early as
possible to assist us in the planning of A&O
programs. Any cancellations within two
weeks of your program will result in a $20
cancellation fee. IMPORTANT: If you have
registered for any optional programs (i.e.,
Family Orientation, Outdoor Adventure,
or Off-Site Orientation) you MUST contact
First Year Programs so that we can cancel
your registration. Failure to cancel these
registrations may result in program fees
remaining on your student account for
which you will be billed. Also, please be
aware that if you decide not to attend the
UW, your $250 NSEOF confirmation fee
will not be refunded.
Late Arrival
Arriving late for your A&O program will
cause you to miss essential advising and
course registration information. If you arrive
more than 60 minutes after the program
begins, you will be required to reschedule
your A&O date. Our staff will assist you in
rescheduling your program when you arrive.
You will also be charged a $20 change fee if
you need to be rescheduled.
No Shows
Attending both days of your A&O program
is a requirement of all entering students. If
you fail to arrive for your scheduled A&O
program, you are subject to a $20 change
fee. If you miss part of your session, you
must return to the First Year Programs
registration website and select a new A&O
date. The University expects that you will
make every effort to attend your scheduled
program. Rescheduling to a significantly
later date will affect the class availability
when you are selecting courses.
