The University of Washington State GEAR UP Project is a university-based
pre-college program serving students and teachers in statewide networks of middle and high
schools. We offer a student summer program, the Summer Institute, which is a college awareness and readiness
program serving middle and high school students. The teacher initiative, the Collaborative for Instructional Development (CID), provides
professional development for educators who work with GEAR UP students.
Summer Institute
Summer Institute offers four one-week sessions of a college immersion experience designed to help GEAR UP
students from partner middle and high schools learn about preparing for college. While in residence at
the University of Washington Seattle campus, students:
- Attend academic seminars designed and taught by University of Washington faculty
- Learn about career and educational possibilities
- Receive mentoring from undergraduate team leaders
- Engage in career and college planning activities
- Develop friendships with college bound peers
- Experience college life while living in residential halls and eating in college restaurants
- Visit historical and cultural sites around Seattle.
Collaborative for Instructional Development (CID)
The CID provides professional development opportunities for teams of educators in partner
schools located throughout Washington State, who work with GEAR UP students. The CID helps
educators improve their ability to prepare their students for success in achieving a post
secondary education by offering:
- Summer Institutes for GEAR UP Educators
- Sustained interaction and support throughout the year
- Opportunities for educators to present and share their work
In partnership with the Washington State GEARUP program.
