Graduate Program
The overarching goal of the graduate component is to create a comprehensive umbrella program to coordinate recruitment, retention, and training activities for underrepresented minority groups in the broad Genomics area. The UW GenOM Project builds upon previous success and on campus resources for underrepresented students, as well as the expertise of University of Washington scientists and faculty. The primary focus is on recruiting and retaining graduate students to work on the genome/technology boundary, with the eventual goal of becoming PIs in their own right. We envision the Seattle group as a core effort for the Genome training grants both in Seattle and around the country.
GenOM Graduate Fellows receive a two-year award of $5000/year, with an additional $500 travel scholarship to be used to attend a conference of their choice. Conferences that students have attended in the past include: American Society of Human Genetics, SACNAS, American Society for Cell Biology, IEEE Computational Systems Bioinformatics, Symposium in Biostatistics: Statistical Genetics & Genomics, Education in Genetics Ethics, American Society of Mammologists, Evolution, Enriching the Academic Experience of College Science Students, and workshops at Cold Spring Harbor laboratories. These travel scholarships are also available by application to other graduate students at the University of Washington who are conducting research in genetics and genome sciences.
