Professor Steve Herbert named Director of UW’s Law, Societies and Justice Program

Professor Steve Herbert has been appointed to a five-year term as Director of the UW’s Law, Societies and Justice Program. This interdisciplinary undergraduate program carries about 150 majors, and focuses on the multiple roles that law and rights play in contemporary society.   Herbert’s research on the regulation of space, the law, and individual rights in urban settings led him to become the first faculty member to have a joint appointment with LSJ when he came to the UW in 2000.  Herbert writes that his most recent research examines “the implementation of the Endangered Species Act to help preserve the Southern Resident Killer Whales who inhabit the waters of the Salish Sea.  This project represents a slight shift in research direction away from urban social control and toward the regulation of the environment.”
