Position Description:

NHC is seeking a GIS Specialist to work in our Seattle office. The GIS Specialist will provide project support to engineers on a variety of water resources engineering projects, such as floodplain mapping, hydrologic and hydraulic model development, and river restoration. Primary duties will include use of ArcGIS for mapping and figure production; spatial analysis using ESRI tools and extensions, including topographic data analysis; map creation and publishing; and GIS technical support, including geospatial data acquisition and management. Requirements include two years of demonstrated experience completing work as described above, proficiency using the ArcGIS suite of products (ArcMap, ArcCatalog, Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst), experience creating FGDC metadata, and excellent communication skills. Python scripting and/or ModelBuilder experience is desirable, as is some familiarity with AutoCAD. Some background or experience in water resources is also a plus.
The ideal candidate will have:
• 2-3 years of experience in GIS
• BS or MS in Geography, Civil Engineering, Environmental Science or related discipline.
• Proficiency in ArcGIS suite of products, geodatabase concepts and development, and FGDC metadata creation.
• Python scripting experience for ArcGIS.
• Experience with AutoCAD.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Must be able to work as part of a team.

Internship: Asia Pacific Civil-Military Disaster Assistance Research Intern

Peace Winds America is a disaster preparedness, response and recovery organization. Peace Winds America advocates for increased collaboration between governments, militaries, NGOs, and the private sector to prepare for and respond to natural disasters in Japan and the Asia-Pacific, with the Japan – U.S. relationship as the cornerstone of humanitarian assistance in the region.

Gain expertise in the policies and procedures of select Host Nations receiving humanitarian aid. Assist with preparing documents for senior government, military, and NGO officials. Description: Research, review/analyze, and evaluate the existing civil-military disaster policies, programs, and training for the initial phase of the 18 month program “Civil-Military Disaster Preparedness Initiative”:
(a) Collect data on the disaster response activities of Japan and the U.S. for disasters in the Asia Pacific over the last ten years.
(b) Clarify and categorize existing disaster policies, plans, exercises and trainings.
(c) Examine the Japan and U.S. civil-military disaster policies, procedures and programs, reviewing documents, program briefs, and evaluations.
(d) Determine effectiveness and results of existing trainings, i.e., capabilities increased, contacts and connectivity established, coordination enhanced amongst the various groups involved (militaries, ministries, NGO communities, and host nations).
(e) Identify areas for improvement and means to increase coordination and collaboration during both planning and operations, while reducing costs.
(f) Assist with drafting and editing of civil-military literary reviews, conference proceedings, policy recommendations, policy briefs, and other materials as required.

Qualifications: Current graduate student or recent Master’s Degree preferred. Excellent research, analytical, and writing skills. Experience in Asian research, particularly disaster preparedness/relief, humanitarian assistance, civil-military collaboration, or international relations. Knowledge of Japanese or another Asian language is a plus.

We expect the intern will work 10 to 20 hours a week for three to six months. The internship begins in January, 2011. Although this position is not paid, through the internship at Peace Winds America you will gain valuable knowledge and experience in the field of nonprofit management and international humanitarian assistance.

Job: Environmental Education Program Coordinator

Duration: Up to 34.5 hours/week through June 10, 2011
Compensation: $13.50/hour

Job Duties:
• PROGRAM OPERATIONS: Coordinate the smooth and safe operation of the Mercer Slough program by:
• Scheduling staff for programs, communicating with staff about the schedule and ensuring that the schedule is running efficiently
• Acting as primary liaison for Mercer Slough Staff
• Assisting teachers with operation of programs and any difficulties that arise as necessary
• Following up on any program or maintenance needs reported by teachers
• Assuming responsibility for the safe site operation of programs in the absence of the Mercer Slough Supervisor and/or Mercer Slough Manager
• EDUCATIONAL PLANNING: Assists in the improvement of programming by:
• Assisting with staff training staff for all current curriculum
• Seeking feedback from staff and updating current curriculum as needed
• Setting up summer field trips.
• FINANCIAL INTEGRITY: Assist with the efficient financial operation of the Mercer Slough program by:
• Purchasing and maintaining program supplies within budgetary constraints

• Assisting in the hiring of staff and volunteers, and tracking HR paperwork

Other Job Considerations:
Most programs have ½ indoor and ½ outdoor components. The Coordinator must be able to work outside in inclement weather and in a variety of environmental conditions including mosquitoes and muddy trails.
Working on the weekend and nights are required at certain times of the year; during the summer season this program is especially busy and will require additional working hours.

Education and Experience:
• B.A. or B.S. in environmental education, science, education or related field
• Good driving record
• Knowledge of fresh water ecosystems with emphasis on ecosystems native to the Puget Sound region
• Able to pass a background check
• Taught Environmental Education programs (at least two years of experience)
• Taught summer camps (for at least two seasons
• Familiarity with outdoor activities such as hiking and canoeing
• Current First Aid and CPR certification (must be willing to obtain)
• Valid Washington State driver’s license (must be willing to obtain)
• Experience teaching summer camps and school programs at the Mercer Slough
