Douglas K. Fleming


Professor Fleming is retired from active teaching duties in June of 1992 after serving the department for 27 years.

Douglas K. Fleming was born in Hoylake near Liverpool, UK, on April 12, 1923. He graduated with a degree in geology from Princeton University in 1944. After three years of service in the US Navy, he joined the States Marine Lines Shipping Company and served in various capacities from 1946 to 1961.

In 1961 he entered the graduate program in geography at the University of Washington and completed his doctoral studies with a dissertation on "Coastal Steel Production in the European Coal and Steel Community 1953 to 1963." In 1965 he was appointed Assistant Professor of Geography in the department and was promoted to Associate Professor in 1972 and to Full Professor in 1984. In 1971-72 he received the departmental award for teaching excellence. He also held an adjunct position in the Institute of Marine Studies at the University of Washington.

In addition to his academic obligations, Douglas K. Fleming continued to serve on various boards of educational and financial institutions. His service as a director (1969-84) at the Seattle Trust and Savings Bank is particularly noted.

In addition to his remarkable teaching record, his publications remain as a lasting document of his academic achievement.
