Joseph Velikonja


Born in Slovenia (Ljubljana) in 1923, educated at the universities of Ljubljana, Rome, McGill, ad Chicago, holds a doctorate from the University of Rome (1948); taught at the University of Washington for 30 years. Before coming to Seattle, he served on the faculties at the University of Chicago, Southern Illinois University, Yale University, University of Wisconsin. He was visiting professor at the University of Liverpool and at the Berkeley.

His primary professional interest is the study of migration, especially of European immigrants to the Americas. His publications include numerous studies of the Italian migration to the United States, especially to the American West. He has been involved in professional organizations for the study of Italian experience and is a regular referee for migration studies to American and international publications. He has given conferences and presentations on the topic in the United States, Canada, Argentina, Italy.
