Geographers at UW are interested in how geographic mobility is interrelated with social and spatial change. For example, many faculty and students investigate how migration influences the wellbeing and identity of migrants and the social, economic and cultural impacts it has on origin and destination communities. Geographers examine these effects at multiple scales, ranging from residential moves within cities to internal migration and transnational flows. They also examine daily mobility for employment and other reasons, relating it to demand for urban transportation systems, inequalities between groups in access to jobs and resources, and identities. Another area of interest in our department is the effect of the movement of disease and contagion on the location of health services worldwide, as well as on concepts of illness and the body. In addition, many economic geographers research the causes and consequences of the flows of goods and services at local, regional and global scales.
