GIS ANALYST/CONSERVATION BIOLOGIST - The Methow Research Station of Sierra Biodiversity Institute (SBI) is accepting applications for a GIS Analyst/Conservation Biologist position.  Sierra Biodiversity Institute is a non-profit, public interest, scientific research and educational organization focused on the study of biodiversity, natural resource and land use issues.  Our approach to research combines field based understanding of natural ecosystems with new landscape analysis tools.  SBI makes intensive use of innovative computer and satellite technology to map, inventory, model and analyze the state of natural landscapes at regional, national and international scales.  SBI provides access to these tools as well as research services to other non-profit, public interest, scientific or educational entities.
Location:  The Methow Research Station is located in the Methow Valley, on the east side of the Cascades in northern Washington.  The Methow is a small, rural, relatively isolated area, with abundant outdoor recreational opportunities.  Much of the valley consists of public lands. Population is several thousand, and the main highway access is closed during winter (typically 4-5 months of the year).

Qualifications:  *Strong background and interest in conservation biology, ecology, or wildlife biology.  MS preferred.  *Experience with ArcView and Arc/Info software (PC and UNIX).  *High level of comfort with Windows 95. DATA DEVELOPMENT MANAGER - Forecasting & Growth Strategy - The Puget Sound Regional Council is seeking an individual for the position of Data Development Manager. This supervisory position will be responsible for developing and maintaining current year regional economic and demographic data bases, as well as interfacing these data with the agency's GIS.  The position requires developing regional data bases, maps, and reports on patterns and trends in transportation, housing, the economy, land use, and demographics in the region.  The position requires experience in data collection, analysis, dissemination, and data base development, strong technical skills with a knowledge of relational data bases and GIS (ARC/INFO preferred), basic understanding of planning issues, including those related to transportation and growth management, the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, supervisory experience, and the ability to function effectively as a team leader and/or member.
A bachelor's degree in geography, information technology, planning, or related discipline is required.  A Masters degree is preferred. Experience should consist of at least six years in the areas of GIS implementation and  management, technology management, urban planning, transportation planning, or related field.  At least two years of supervisory experience is also required.

GEOGRAPHIC SKILLS AND CENSUS 2000 - Two hundred sixty-six million and counting. No one knows, at this time, what the official Census 2000 population count will be, but that is the task given to the Census Bureau to complete over the next 4 years. Sure, the Census Bureau employs many statisticians and analysts, but as maps are made from the ever dynamic TIGER¨ data base and as a Master Address File linked to this data base is constructed, staff possessing geographic and other related skills will have a major impact on the success of Census 2000. We are looking for staff to work on geographic programs in our headquarters office near Washington, DC and in our 12 regional offices throughout the U.S.
    This staff will include cartographers or geographers or those with geographic training and a related degree.
