Remember that work within the UW Geographc Information Systems Concentration can include and build on:

  • the spatial distribution of goods services and other aspects of economic activities
  • regional economic development and interdependence
  • the locational implications of economic and organizational restructuring
  • the spatial patterns of international trade
  • the spatial behavior of transnational corporations
  • the increasing use of spatial and demographi data in retail location analysis -- the emergence of geodemographic profiling

Many of the skills and abilities developed in this option tend to be highly analytical. They include:

  • data gathering, processing, analyzing
  • proficiency in spatial data definition and classification
  • database and spreadsheet manipulation
  • information literacy
  • critical thinking strategies for geographical problem-solving
  • GIS project management and workgroup collaboration
  • project development and presentation
  • data analysis with GIS operations and models
  • understanding of a wide range of geographic data
  • ability to prepare maps that communciate effectively
  • ability towork with census data
  • ability to use land use data (parcels, zoning, etc.)
  • testing various components of data quality and preparation of data quality report
  • using applications from several geographic interests and concentrations (land use, transportation, resource analysis, etc.)
  • bringing visualization techniques together with analysis and data management

The background and analytical skills developed in this option are much in demand by an extraordinary range of government levels, as well as by many firms in the private business and non-prof sector.

Typical careers include work as:

  • GIS technicians, analysts and managers
  • urban planners
  • data managers
  • natural resource analysts
  • information systems specialists
  • transportation planners
  • project managers
  • remote sensing specialists
  • GIS systems designers and software managers
  • environmental analysts

Consider what skills and abilities are being asked for in job descriptions and consider what you'll need to do (ideally, while you are still in school) to prepare yourself for other jobs like these. Then, build your resume to demonstrate your relevant and related skills and experience.
