jobs for geographers

where to find job listings related to society and environment

Remember that work within the UW Society and Environment Option can include and build on:
  • resource geography
  • cultural and political ecology
  • health and environment
  • GIS and resource analysis

Consider what skills and abilities are being asked for in these jobs and consider what you'll need to do (ideally, while you are still in school) to prepare yourself for other jobs like these. Then, build your resume and portfolio to demonstrate your relevant and related skills and experience.

Skills and abilities developed in this focus include:

  • understanding and using the geographical concepts of scale, space and time, globalization and ecosystems in analyzing society-environment relations
  • designing projects, conducting analysis, interpreting data and balancing knowledge and opinion, so as to participate in environmental decision-making
  • engaging in contemporary debates on environmental change and environmental management and regulatory approaches by domestic, state, agricultural, industrial and service sectors
  • understanding and critically evaluating the philosophical underpinnings of health and environmental social movements and interest groups
  • gathering data, processing, analysis and evaluation
  • analysis and problem solving
  • project management and presentation

The background and skills developed in this focus are in demand by state and federal agencies, as well as non-governmental agencies and privately-owned consulting firms and other research-oriented organizations.

Typical career work in this option can include:

  • researcher/writer of environmental impact statements
  • social services coordinator
  • environmental project leader
  • field organizer
  • research project interviewer
  • environment policy analyst
  • GIS analyst/conservation biologist
  • code enforcement officer
  • manager, regulatory affairs
  • community development specialist
  • environmental health specialist
  • project coordinator
  • water quality technician

Note: Many of the following links do not contain job listings, however, as most are "resource" sites, they usually contain links to associations and organizations that do list jobs. Remember that a primary goal in job search is to find the people (and organizations) doing the kind of work you want to do. Then you can approach them proactively to seek work with them.
