Assistant instructor for summer, field-based environmental education programs on IslandWood’s Bainbridge island campus. Seattle Municipal League
The Municipal League of King County, a nonpartisan nonprofit organization that “works to ensure accountable local and state governments and an informed, involved citizenry,” is offering five internships in their Candidate Evaluation Program. Positions include investigators and website managers and editors.  This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in politics, government, & state and local issues. Also a great way to meet candidates and public officials.  Applicants should be familiar with online research techniques. Stipend provided, work suns May 25-July 17. Application deadline: May 1.

As a grassroots organization, we have limited resources and are in need of passionate people to volunteer their time with our organization. I am happy to offer volunteers internship opportunities, references, and I’m open to proposals students have for a class paper or project. There is also an opportunity to travel with a group of volunteers during the summer of 2010.

We need immediate help in the following areas:

Develop donation database
Develop fundraising ideas for 2009
Disseminate information about Ugunja and CVK’s work in the area
Plan and manage fundraising projects
Manage a donation drive for clothes, books, blankets, etc.

Search and Maps team. This team focuses on improving the real estate search experience and providing a better map interface for customers. Providing Geo reference with search results is the key to the team’s successes. Zillow.com is currently looking for an intern to create the process and develop reprocessing models for creating city/neighborhood boundaries.
Responsibilities for this internship include working with existing GEO data to create a web-based data format used by Zillow and creating new GEO data from scanned vector maps. Zillow needs expertise in spatial analysis and vectorization using ArcGIS 9.3. Required skills (recommended): ESRI ArcGIS 9.X products, ArcGIS Desktop, ArcScan for ARCGIS. City of Seattle's Department of Finance (DOF). Parking Violation Capture Rate Study. Measure the violation status of parked vehicles occupying on-street parking spaces in the City's right-of-way.

Snohomish Conservation District. Water Quality Intern. Assist with water quality monitoring, equipment maintenance, data management and reporting. Calibrating and maintaining equipment; troubleshooting any equipment problems that arise and working with equipment companies to repair or replace instruments; notifying water quality lead of need for additional solutions and other supplies for monitoring; completing monitoring in the field with water quality lead or other field person; sample collection and field data records; data entry and data management using Excel; writing and editing water quality monitoring plans and final reports.

City of Sea-Tac. Under the direction of the GIS Coordinator/Analyst or GIS Analysts, consolidate and enhance the City's existing transportation and storm water data sets for migration to geodatabase structures. Create, update and integrate GIS datasets using ArcGIS 9.2; Use Editor to create and modify data; Use ArcToolbox to manipulate data and streamline processes; create and modify simple maps using ArcGIS; print maps, load paper into plotters; verify existing GIS data and collect new data in the field; read engineering drawings; work collaboratively with other GIS staff; communicate and document project methods and status, developments, and hurdles.

King County Dept. of Natural Resources and Parks. GPS Data Collection. Work with Asset Management staff to collect GPS data for all of the manholes and conveyance facilities in the King County wastewater system; extensive field work for two teams of two interns with some office work to migrate the collected data into a GIS; make daily collection plans, collect the necessary background information from the office, collect the GPS data in the field, post process the data and enter it into the GIS, and produce cartographic and other types of reports. II. GIS Project Intern. Link GIS information of the sewer system and facilities to scanned engineering drawings; field verification, QA/QC and review of spatial components of existing data. Upon completion of this project, users will be able to go to the intranet, click on a map, and have the choice of photo, drawing, attribute and additional information links; interface with the GPS Data Collection interns.

City of Kirkland, Dept. of Planning and Community Development. Perform a variety of long range and current planning tasks; learn about the planning profession and the functions and activities of a planning department; assigned projects may include but are not limited to: preparing presentation graphics, conducting data collection and data entry, making changes to Zoning and Comprehensive Plan maps, working with vendors and organizing the printing of various documents.

City of Shoreline, Traffic Services Internship. Assist in managing the City's Neighborhood Traffic Safety Program (NTSP). The NTSP is a joint City-resident program addressing citizen concerns regarding residential traffic volumes, accidents, speeding, and cut-through traffic. Work closely with citizens in implementing this program coordination assistance of public meetings and citizen requests; daily interaction with citizens; training volunteers; working with staff to perform traffic studies, and performing a variety of clerical and records research duties related to traffic issues.

CH2MHill. Calling local foundation grantees and developing an understanding of how their project work can be represented spatially; entering grantee project data from grants and proposals into a web-based Grant Portfolio Mapping system; performing any follow-up that may be required to perfect the data in the system; use common VirtualEarth map tools (set points and lines, delineate polygons), familiarity with geography on the African continent and knowledge of the United Nations GAUL (Global Administrative Unit Layer) dataset. Knowledge of agriculture development or environmental resource management.

US Environmental Protection Agency. Assist Aquatic Resources Unit with implementing a pilot project dealing with priority watersheds. Work with wetland scientists and GIS experts to gather appropriate GIS data layers within priority watersheds. Create GIS data layers from internal data sources.

City of Sumner, Planning Intern. Assists with permit review, counter coverage and other research for Community Development Dept.

ESA Adolfson, GIS Internship. Using GIS for environmental planning. Georeferencing, editing, digitizing and map production for print and digital presentation.

Port of Seattle, Aviation Planning Intern. Collect, compile, report, provide analysis and interpretation about SeaTac passengers, aircraft operations, ground access vehicles and cargo. Also report on other airports, esp. in regards to new technologies, business and planning trends, and pertinent local, state and federal policy issues.

City of Bainbridge Island, Shoreline Stewardship Program intern. Planning Dept. Learn about shorelines and environmental management issues and challenges associated with managing natural resources and environmental planning.

Ross & Associates Environmental Consulting, geocoding intern. Policy consulting for the EPA and other groups. Several UW Geography alumni have worked here as well.
