German 101-203 are pre-major/minor courses.

In German 100 (101-103) students acquire the skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing to a basic survival level of proficiency. There is a strong emphasis on culture.

The first two quarters of second-year German (201-202) aim at increasing the student's proficiency in all skills, including a thorough grammar review and expansion. The courses make ample use of videos, and feature films to enhance cultural exposure. In German 203 students read and discuss literary texts. At the end of second-year students should be able to participate competently in a conversation on everyday topics and be able to read non-technical German with the help of a dictionary.

In the language courses on the major/minor level (301-403) students practice reading, writing and conversation on increasingly complex subjects. The cultural component has been strengthened: all courses deal with 20th century German history and society and are either film based or film assisted.

ASSESSMENT

In designing our assessment instruments we also take into consideration test instruments that are nationally and internationally recognized. At the end of each year, students have the realistic chance at passing the equivalent level tests offered by the Goethe Institute or the German Universities respectively and thereby at acquiring the internationally recognized diplomas.
