| Courses taken in German departments (Deutsches Institut, Deutsches Seminar, Seminar für deutsche Sprache und Literatur etc.) at German universities will receive 5 UW credits regardless of contact hours provided they are graded and the student can document completion of all course requirements with a "Schein." These courses also easily transfer into the major/minor and could replace required core courses (see the description of our two major tracts under "academic programs" on this web site for more detailed information on what courses are required for which major/minor). Courses taken in German-as-a-second-language programs (Deutsch als Fremdsprache, Deutsch für Ausländer etc.) at German universities will receive the appropriate number of UW quarter credits based on the number of contact hours (i.e., a semester course that meets for two hours per week will receive 3 UW quarter credits) provided the student received a grade and brings back a "Schein." These courses will most likely apply to the major as electives, but cannot replace required core courses. Students are encouraged to discuss their plan of study with the undergraduate advisor before they leave to study abroad. For courses taken at the Goethe Institutes in Germany or at the Internationales Kulturinstitut IKI in Vienna, the following credit conversion applies. Please note that a graded certificate from the institution in question is a prerequisite for a credit transfer. :
