Specialized Gerontology Program The CSWE National Center for Gerontological Social Work Education (Gero-Ed Center) funds accredited BSW, MSW, or combined BSW/MSW programs to develop competency-based aging-specific curriculum via the Specialized Gerontology (“Gero”) Program. The Specialized Gero Program provides faculty with the resources to develop, implement, and institutionalize gerontological competencies at the generalist and advanced levels of practice—as a minor, area of emphasis, certificate, specialization, or concentration. |

The Need Prior gerontology curriculum development projects funded by the John A. Hartford Foundation have prepared social work graduates with gerontological competencies for generalist, or foundation-level, practice. The success of this infusion approach, and the maturation of the gero social work field, have fostered student and faculty demand for additional gerontological competencies at the generalist and advanced levels of practice through specialized gero (also referred to as gero-specific) curricular structures. The Specialized Gero Program builds upon complementary Hartford curricular initiatives: the Geriatric Enrichment in Social Work Education (GeroRich) Program, the Curriculum Development Institute (CDI) Program, and the Hartford Partnership Program for Aging Education (HPPAE, formerly Practicum Partnership Program). Whereas the HPPAE focuses on advanced MSW field curriculum, the Specialized Gerontology Program emphasizes gero-specific curricular structures at both the BSW and MSW levels.
