Competencies Overview The Hartford curriculum development projects have used a competency-based approach to the infusion of gerontological (gero) social work content in required classroom and field curricula. The competency-based education approach of the CSWE 2008 Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards focuses on student outcomes based in practice behaviors, that is, what a student must learn and be able to do. It stipulates 10 competencies common to all social work practice and that apply to both generalist and advanced practice. Programs may build and apply these ten competencies in an area of concentration, such as aging. In 2008-09, a national Competency Work Group linked gero competencies to the 2008 EPAS and identified one set of gero competencies for all the GSWI programs, the Geriatric Social Work Competency Scale II With Life-Long Learning in Relationship to Leadership Skills Advanced Gero Social Work Practice Guide--NEW! The Advanced Gero Social Work Practice Guide links the gero competencies to select 2008 EPAS practice behaviors common to all social work practice, to knowledge in aging for generalist practice and to advanced gero knowledge and practice behaviors. It also identifies course exercises, assignments to measure student attainment of gero practice behaviors and research articles providing evidence-based social work practice.
