Profile of Bronwen Miller
One of the first CPG graduates to earn her certificate entirely via distance Learning.
Over the last several years, Bronwen Miller had helped aging family members and neighbors with various needs as they strove to maintain their independence. Bronwen realized that not only was gerontology an area where increasing numbers of people would need assistance but also one where she could be most useful and where she felt welcomed.
In June 2000, Bronwen began "Senior's Smile," a non-medical outreach service that provides customized services from wellness calls to helping organize necessary documents to writing personal histories. She also serves as a resource for information and services both on the community and national level, i.e. informing a senior of the local volunteer outreach program or informing them of the latest changes in Medicare.
Shortly after opening her business, Bronwen heard of the CPG. The timing was fortuitous: Bronwen wanted to broaden her understanding of aging issues as well as increase her viability for employment in senior services. She appreciated the option of Distance Learning since she could not relocate to Seattle, and the local community college offered no courses in gerontology. The CPG offered legitimacy for her newly chosen career path and she could take one course at a time.
Bronwen feels some of the benefits of the CPG are that students can augment their skills in gerontology or begin a new career. The courses offered a whole new understanding of the complexity of public policy and gave her the ability to listen to aging news with a "knowledgeable ear." Bronwen found the library resources extremely valuable as well as the textbooks, especially those for the three core courses.
