Deborah L. Huang, M.D., M.S.

Acting Instructor

Dr. Deborah Huang

Career Interest: Dr. Huang completed her undergraduate (Summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa), medical school, and internal medicine residency training at George Washington University. While in Washington, D.C., she served for a year as a Science Policy Fellow and as an intern for Senator Bill Frist. Her experience ignited an interest in research and health policy. After completing her residency, she spent 4 years as an ambulatory care physician for Group Health Cooperative in the Seattle area. Reflecting her interest and commitment to academic geriatric medicine, she chose to return for further training with the University of Washington Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program. She is also training in the Masters of Clinical Research program of the School of Public Health and Community Medicine. Dr. Huang plans to remain in academic medicine as a physician scientist.

Research Interest: Abstract for research project: Guidelines for metformin prescription in type 2 Diabetes Mellitus are defined by serum creatinine. However, serum creatinine underestimates creatinine clearance in older adults. Dr. Huang undertook a study to determine estimated creatinine clearance(eCC) and estimated glomeular filtration rate (eGFR) in older (>65) patients with type 2 diabetes who were prescribed metformin at Harborview Medical Center. Of patients treated with metformin, 69.2% had chronic kidney disease (CKD) by eGFR or eCC and 18.6% had Phase 4 and 5 CKD. Dr. Huang is now assessing potential side effects of metformin in CKD patients. A lack of side effects may warrant modification of existing prescription guidelines. Dr. Huang plans to publish the completed analyses for this study. Dr. Huang next plans to determine the association between diabetes mellitus and oral health that impacts quality of life and its relationship to access to health care.
