Program Description
he primary goals
of the fellowship are to provide interdisciplinary
clinical training in geriatric medicine and to prepare
physicians for an academic career in gerontology.
Clinical services encompass the spectrum of ambulatory
care, acute inpatient care, subacute inpatient care, and
nursing home follow-up. Participation in existing
geriatric research is integral to the program; these
opportunities are described below. Fellows participate in
the regular teaching activities of the Division,
including: journal club, research seminars, and clinical
conferences. Additionally, fellows gain teaching
experience through teaching in courses for medical
students at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum,
and supervision of housestaff.
The fellowship, which is ACGME accredited, consists of
two- and three-year programs. The fellowship is an
integrated experience based at several sites: Harborview
Medical Center (HMC), the Seattle/American Lake
Department of Veterans Affairs, VA Puget Sound Health Care
System (VAPSHCS), University of Washington Medical Center
(UWMC) and six affiliated long-term care facilities. Each
site is described in the Training Sites section.
