Abstract for research project: Guidelines for metformin prescription in type 2 Diabetes Mellitus are defined by serum creatinine. However, serum creatinine underestimates creatinine clearance in older adults. Dr. Huang undertook a study to determine estimated creatinine clearance(eCC) and estimated glomeular filtration rate (eGFR) in older (>65) patients with type 2 diabetes who were prescribed metformin at Harborview Medical Center. Of patients treated with metformin, 69.2% had chronic kidney disease (CKD) by eGFR or eCC and 18.6% had Phase 4 and 5 CKD. Dr. Huang is now assessing potential side effects of metformin in CKD patients. A lack of side effects may warrant modification of existing prescription guidelines. Dr. Huang plans to publish the completed analyses for this study. Dr. Huang next plans to determine the association between diabetes mellitus and oral health that impacts quality of life and its relationship to access to health care.
