Alzheimer’s Disease Patient Registry/Adult Changes in Thought

Funding source:

National Institute on Aging

Description of Work:

The University of Washington Alzheimer Disease Patient Registry (ADPR) is a model clinical and epidemiological database for dementia and Alzheimer’s disease (AD).  It was established in late 1986 by a grant from the National Institute on Aging and is based in a large health maintenance organization-Group Health Cooperative of Puget Sound (GHC). The ADPR enrolled only cases of dementia and AD who came to medical attention since January 1987. Enrollment was completed in March 1996.  Epidemiological/genetic studies based on ADPR are ongoing.

The formation of the ACT sample is also based at GHC and consists of a cohort of cognitively intact research subjects age 65 or older enrolled between 1994-1996.  Enrollment is ongoing at 10 new subjects each month.  This portion of the study follows subjects forward in time and eventually will be able to compare the occurrence of dementias (primarily AD and vascular dementia) and risk factors between the previous case-control analyses and also with ongoing cross-cultural studies.
