We are currently studying new materials for solar energy harvesting and biosensing. We have a particular emphasis on systems such as organic photovoltaics (plastic solar cells), colloidal quantum dots, and plasmonics. To study these materials, we develop and apply combinations of scanning probe microscopy and optical spectroscopy. We have invented techniques such as fast (sub-microsecond) time-resolved electrostatic force microscopy (trEFM) and developed photoconductive atomic force microscopy (pcAFM) for use in a variety of thin film semiconductors.
