Bob and Sally Behnke Endowed Chair for the Health of the Student Athlete

The Bob and Sally Behnke Endowed Professorship for the Health of the Student Athlete was created in 2007 to enhance the University’s ability to recruit and retain distinguished faculty in sports medicine, faculty who will place a clinical focus on the University’s student athletes, in the Department of Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine. 

In creating the professorship, Sally Behnke, a University of Washington alumna, laureate and long-term volunteer leader, honored the memory of her husband, Robert J. “Bob” Behnke. Mr. Behnke — who was also a UW alumnus and volunteer — shared Sally Behnke’s love of sports, especially at the University of Washington.

Mrs. Behnke’s original commitment was augmented by donations previously made to create the Health of the Student Athlete Faculty Fellowship. The lead contributors to the fellowship, Bill and Lannie Hoglund, and other fellowship donors agreed to direct their gifts to the professorship. Eventually, the professorship will become a chair.
