William H. Gates III Endowed Chair in Biomedical Sciences
Est. 1993
The William H. Gates III Endowed Chair in Biomedical Sciences was established in 1993 to enable the University of Washington to attract and retain a distinguished scientist in the biomedical sciences to serve as chair of the Department of Molecular Biotechnology.
At this time, the Department of Molecular Biotechnology was a new department in the UW School of Medicine, established through the generosity of William Gates III, then chair and chief executive officer of Microsoft Corp. Mr. Gates, one of the country’s most creative and successful business leaders, is an advocate of interdisciplinary research that draws together multi-disciplinary scientists to collaborate to solve complex problems.
